Should I add an AI chatbot to my small business website?

Every website tool now offers a chatbot. Most of them annoy visitors and answer nothing. A few quietly qualify leads and book calls at 2am. The difference is not the tool, it is what it is built to do.

The short answer:

Add an AI assistant when visitors regularly have questions that stand between them and getting in touch: pricing, availability, process, whether you do what they need. Skip it if your site gets little traffic or the only action is "email me"; fix the traffic and the FAQ first. When it is right, build it on your own content with a clear job (answer, qualify, book) and a proper handover to you, not a generic bubble that says "I'm not sure about that."

When it earns its place

Service businesses that get the same ten questions over and over. Businesses that want to qualify a lead before it reaches the calendar, so the call is with someone who is a fit. Product businesses with sizing, delivery or compatibility questions. Sites with a lot of content where people cannot find what they need. In all of these, the assistant removes the wait between "I have a question" and "I am booked", and that wait is where leads go cold.

When it is a waste of money

If almost nobody visits the site yet, a chatbot is a receptionist in an empty lobby; spend on getting found first. If the site is a portfolio and the only action is a contact form, a good FAQ does the same job with no monthly fee. And if you are adding it because the platform offered it, rather than because customers ask questions, you will switch it off within a month.

The generic bubble versus a real assistant

The off-the-shelf widget knows nothing about you, so it hedges, apologises and sends people to a contact form. A properly built assistant is trained on your actual pages, your FAQ and the answers you give on calls. It knows your prices start around a certain figure and what changes them. It asks two or three qualifying questions, drops the details into a simple lead list, sends you a WhatsApp or an email, and hands the right people straight to your booking link. That is the version worth having.

What it costs

Hosted widgets are typically a monthly subscription that scales with conversations, and you are renting. A custom assistant built on a model like Claude costs a one-off build plus very small running costs at small-business traffic, and you own it. For most businesses under ten people, the custom route is cheaper within the year and, more importantly, it actually answers questions. It is also a good first project if you are curious about custom AI-backed software without betting the company on it.

What a good build includes

A knowledge base written from your real content. A clear personality that sounds like you, not a robot. Rules for what it will not answer, and a graceful handover to a human. Lead capture that goes somewhere you will actually look. Analytics so you can see what people ask, which is free market research. And it must be fast and light so it does not slow the site down, which most widgets do.

A sensible order

Write the FAQ first; you need it anyway and it is the assistant's brain. Make sure the site is being found. Then add the assistant, with a specific job, and watch what people ask it for a month. That last part is where the real value is: the questions people ask a chatbot are the questions your website was failing to answer.

Related questions

Will it replace me answering enquiries?

No, and it should not. It answers the routine questions instantly and gets the right people booked, so the conversations you have are with people who are ready.

Is it safe to let an AI talk to my customers?

Yes, if it is built with limits: it only answers from your content, it never invents prices or promises, and it hands over to you when unsure. That is a build decision, not a feature of the tool.

Can it work on a Shopify or Squarespace site?

Yes. A custom assistant is a small script that can be added to any platform, with the logic running separately.
