Do I need a Meta pixel and tracking before I run ads?

Short answer: yes. Running ads to a website with no pixel or tracking is the quickest way to waste your budget, because you cannot see what happened and the platform cannot learn who to find for you.

The short answer:

Yes. Before you spend anything on ads, your website needs the Meta pixel, the right meta tags and conversion tracking in place. Without them you cannot see who clicked, who enquired or who bought, you cannot show ads again to people who visited, and Meta cannot learn which people to find for you. The money is spent and you learn nothing. Set up tracking first, test it, then advertise.

01What the pixel does

The Meta pixel is a small piece of code on your website. It tells Meta when someone visits, enquires or buys, so you can measure results and the platform can find more people like them.

02What you lose without it

You cannot tell whether your ads produced enquiries or sales. You cannot show ads again to people who visited. And the ad platform has nothing to learn from, so it shows your ads to the wrong people for longer.

03Meta tags and sharing

Meta tags are the title, description and preview image of each page. They control how your pages look in search results and when shared. Missing or wrong tags make your links look unfinished and give people less reason to click.

04What to have in place first

The Meta pixel with conversion events such as lead, contact and purchase, Google Analytics, a form or button that fires an event when someone enquires, cookie consent set up properly, and your meta tags on every page.

05Test before you spend

Make a test enquiry yourself, then check that the event arrives in Meta. Only when it does, turn the ads on.

06How we do it

Our website and SEO pack includes Google Analytics, Search Console and tracking pixels. If you plan to advertise, we scope the tracking in from the start, so the first pound you spend teaches you something.

FAQ

Questions, answered

What is a Meta pixel?

It is a snippet of code on your website that reports visits and actions, such as an enquiry or a purchase, back to Meta. It lets you measure your ads and lets Meta find more people like your customers.

Can I run ads now and add tracking later?

You can, but you will have paid for results you cannot measure and data you cannot reuse. It is far cheaper to set up tracking first.

Do I need a cookie banner?

If you use tracking pixels, you need to handle consent properly for visitors in the UK and Europe. We set that up as part of the tracking.

Do I need a website to run ads?

You need somewhere to send people that makes the next step obvious and measures it. That can be a simple landing page, as long as the tracking works.
