How long does SEO take for a small business, and what should happen each month?

Anyone who promises page one in thirty days is either targeting searches nobody makes or is about to get you penalised. Here is a realistic timeline, and what you should be able to see along the way.

The short answer:

For a small business, local and long-tail searches can start producing calls within four to eight weeks, mostly through the Google Business Profile and a few well-targeted pages. Competitive searches in a city take three to six months. Broad national terms take longer and are usually the wrong target anyway. Whatever the timeline, you should see specific, named progress every month, not a report full of graphs.

Why it takes time at all

Google has to find your pages, decide they are trustworthy, and see people engage with them. New or neglected sites start with no track record. That is not a technical delay you can pay to skip; it is Google watching for a while before it trusts you with its users.

A realistic month-by-month picture

Month one. The foundations: fixing what is broken, getting the Google Business Profile complete and verified, choosing the exact searches to go after (specific ones people actually make, not vanity terms), and rewriting or building the pages that answer them. You should be able to read those pages and see the difference.

Months two to three. The first movement. Impressions start rising in Search Console, the profile begins appearing in the map for your core searches in your area, and the first pages creep onto page one for long-tail phrases. Some businesses get their first calls here.

Months three to six. This is where it usually becomes real: consistent map visibility, several pages ranking for the searches that matter, and enquiries you can trace back to search. Reviews and steady content keep it compounding.

Six months and beyond. Defending and widening: more services, more locations, and the AI side, where ChatGPT and Perplexity start naming you. That is a different discipline, covered in what are AEO and GEO.

What changes the speed

How competitive your area and trade are. Whether the site is new or has history. How fast you can provide the things only you can provide: photos, answers to customer questions, and a trickle of reviews. And whether the person doing the work is targeting searches with real intent. A page that ranks first for "accountant for a growing UK business" is worth more than one that ranks tenth for "accountant".

How to tell if anything is actually happening

Ask for Search Console access, not a PDF. Impressions should be climbing month on month. Ask which pages were written or changed and why. Ask which searches you now appear for that you did not before. If the answers are vague, the work probably is too. We show clients this data directly, in their own client portal, so there is nothing to interpret.

The fastest wins, in order

Fix and complete the Google Business Profile. Write one strong page for each service you actually want to sell. Make it obvious on every page who you are for and how to contact you. Then keep the reviews coming. Everything else builds on that. If you want the full picture of what matters and what does not, read how to get your small business found on Google.

Should I run Google Ads while I wait?

Sometimes, yes. Ads can cover the first few months and, usefully, tell you which searches actually convert so the SEO targets the right ones.

Do I have to keep paying forever?

No, but rankings drift if a site is abandoned. A light monthly effort keeps what you have earned; a heavy one only makes sense while you are still growing into new searches.

What about AI search, does that take as long?

Often less, because there is far less competition. Businesses with clear, specific pages can get named by ChatGPT within weeks. Three of our clients are ranked first there.
