Why is my Google Business Profile not showing up, and how do I fix it?
For a local business, the Google map listing brings in more calls than the website does. When it disappears or sits on page two, the phone goes quiet fast.
Profiles usually vanish for one of four reasons: the listing is unverified, it has been suspended for a guideline breach, it is a duplicate, or it is simply outranked because it is thin. The first three are fixable in days if you know the process. The fourth is fixed by completing the profile properly, getting reviews steadily, and matching the categories and wording to what people actually search.
First, work out which problem you have
Search your business name from a phone, in an incognito window. If nothing appears at all, the profile is probably unverified, suspended or was never created. If it appears when you search the name but not when you search what you do ("pizzeria near me", "accountant in Leighton Buzzard"), the profile exists but is being outranked. Those are different jobs.
Unverified or never claimed
Google will not show an unverified profile in the map results. Verification is a postcard, a video or a phone call depending on the business. It is tedious and Google has become far stricter, especially for businesses without a shopfront. Get it done before anything else, because nothing you add to the profile counts until it is verified.
Suspended
A suspension is usually triggered by something that looks like a guideline breach: a keyword stuffed into the business name, a virtual office or PO Box address, a category that does not match, or several listings from the same address. The fix is to correct the cause and file a reinstatement request, with evidence. Do not create a new listing; that makes it worse. We recovered the profile for FLY Pizzeria in Milan this way, and it now brings in a steady flow of orders.
Duplicate listings
Old owners, well-meaning staff and Google itself create duplicates. They split your reviews and confuse the ranking. Find them, claim them, and merge or remove them so there is one listing with everything on it.
Outranked by competitors
This is the most common problem, and it is the one most businesses ignore. The profiles that win are complete: correct primary category and sensible secondary ones, every service listed with a description, opening hours that are actually right, real photos added regularly, a steady trickle of reviews with replies, and a description written for the searches people make, not for you. Mainteniq and Fouracre Accountancy both went from invisible to top of the map for their core searches largely through the profile, before any advertising.
What a properly optimised profile looks like
Every field filled in. Services and products with descriptions. Photos of real work, updated monthly. Posts every couple of weeks. Reviews asked for after every good job, ideally automatically (see stop missing calls and leads), and every review answered. The website it links to says the same things the profile does, in the same words, so Google trusts both.
Where the website fits
The profile gets you in the map; the website gets you chosen. If the site is slow, vague or looks abandoned, people bounce from the profile straight to the next one. Fixing both together is the fastest way we know to turn a quiet phone into a busy one, which is why Google Business Profile optimisation is part of our growth systems work rather than a bolt-on.
Related questions
How long does a reinstatement take?
Anywhere from a few days to a few weeks, depending on how clear the evidence is. A clean, honest submission the first time is much faster than three rushed ones.
Can I put keywords in my business name?
No. It is against the guidelines and is one of the most common reasons for suspension. Use your real trading name and put the keywords in the categories, services and description.
Do reviews really affect ranking?
Yes, both the number and the recency. A profile with steady new reviews beats one with more reviews that stopped a year ago.
