GCSE maths revision app and website: Show Working

Show Working is a GCSE revision app for pupils in England, on iPhone and iPad. We designed and built the app and the website that explains it. Maths is on the App Store now: fresh questions every time, with the working shown for every answer, one step at a time.

The website, live today.

A revision app has to earn two kinds of trust: a pupil who wants ten useful minutes, and a parent who wants to know what it costs and what it keeps.

The problem

What they needed

GCSE maths questions are everywhere online, but the working behind each answer usually is not. Pupils need practice that shows the method, and parents need to know what it costs and what it keeps.

What we did

The build

An iPhone and iPad app that makes fresh questions every time and shows the working for each answer, mock papers under exam rules, friend challenges, and a website with a page for every question a pupil or parent might search for.

The result

Live on the App Store

Maths is on the UK App Store now, free to download with the first topic free. The website explains the app, answers parents, and gives pupils free revision guides.

04 / What we builtAnd what it means for pupils and parents

What we did.

  • The app, for iPhone and iPad

Designed and built by us: a practice screen that shows the answer and then the working in plain steps, a working pad for a finger or Apple Pencil, a daily ten minutes, mock papers with a timer, and friend challenges by a short code. What it means for pupils and parents: pupils get the method, not just the number, and can practise anywhere.

  • Questions made as you practise

Each question is generated, so a pupil never runs out and cannot learn the answers by heart. Answers are computed by exact maths and checked against a separate maths library, never written by an AI. What it means for pupils and parents: the answers are right, and every practice session is fresh.

  • Privacy built in

No account, no adverts and no tracking in the app. Progress stays on the pupil's own device and in their own iCloud. What it means for pupils and parents: parents can say yes without reading a long policy.

  • A website for pupils and parents

The home page, a page for every GCSE maths topic with worked examples, mock papers, a parents and carers page, an honest comparison with free questions, questions and answers, and a library of free revision guides. What it means for pupils and parents: a parent or pupil searching for help lands on a page that answers them, then finds the app.

  • Set up to be found

Page titles, descriptions, headings, structured data, a sitemap and an llms.txt file, so Google and AI tools can read what the app is and who it is for. What it means for pupils and parents: the app is explained clearly to the search engines and AI assistants people already ask.

  • Store listing and support

App Store page, support address, privacy policy and terms, written in plain language and matched to what the app does. What it means for pupils and parents: everything a parent checks before downloading is there and consistent.

05 / Challenge by challengeWhat we did and why

The problems, and how we solved them.

Every project hits real obstacles. These are the ones on this build, each with what it was and what we did about it.

  • Questions are everywhere, the working is not

The challenge. Free GCSE maths questions are easy to find. Pupils lose marks for method, and most sources only give the final answer.

How we solved it. Every answer comes with the working, one step at a time, in plain words, straight after the pupil answers. A working pad lets them write their own and compare it.

  • Never running out of questions

The challenge. A fixed question bank gets learned by heart, and pupils run out of practice.

How we solved it. Questions are generated as the pupil practises: 181 kinds of question across all 54 GCSE maths topics. The app has a Report a wrong question button.

  • Answers that can be trusted

The challenge. A maths app that marks wrongly loses a pupil's trust at once.

How we solved it. Answers are computed with exact fractions and surds and checked against a separate maths library. Its site states that 362,000 questions were checked on 23 October 2026 with no problems found.

  • Reassuring pupils and parents

The challenge. Pupils are 14 to 16, and parents want to know about cost and data.

How we solved it. One payment per subject, no subscription, Family Sharing, no account, no adverts and no tracking in the app, with a parents and carers page that says so.

  • Being found by people who search

The challenge. Pupils and parents search for topics, formulas and how to revise, not for an app name.

How we solved it. The website has a page for each topic, free revision guides, a mock papers page and a comparison page, set up so Google and AI assistants understand it.

  • An honest listing

The challenge. Apps in this space are easily confused with exam boards.

How we solved it. The app and the site describe the maths as following the Department for Education's subject content used by the exam boards, and say plainly that it is independent and not affiliated with any of them.

06 / How it is builtThe same rules every time

Hand-coded, written down, yours.

Every site we build follows the same rules, so you always know what you are getting and who owns it.

01

Hand-coded, no template

Written by hand for this business. No theme, no page builder, no pile of plugins slowing it down.

02

Fast, and better for search

Less code means faster pages, and speed is one of the things Google looks at. It also keeps visitors from leaving.

03

SEO and AEO, written down

What we do for Google and for AI assistants is agreed in writing before we start, then reported in plain English.

04

You own it

Once the final invoice is paid, the domain, the code, the words and the pictures are yours.
